Where and how did your business start?
It all began in 1981 with a wedding dress that I designed and made for a friend in need. From this, I received two more commissions and I grew the business organically from there.
How has being a female business owner shaped your experience and challenges along your journey?
I have never considered being a female business owner an issue. As an entrepreneur challenges and setbacks are a given; what’s important is to keep moving forward and learning to adapt quickly – a little tenacity and self-belief goes a long way!
What initiatives or support systems do you believe are crucial for empowering and advancing women in entrepreneurship?
I think representation and opportunity are the most important factors. My team is 99% female and made up of extremely talented and hardworking individuals, from our seamstresses through to the garment tech team. We have many initiatives and development schemes to support and train young talent, such as work experience placements, our ‘year in industry’ scheme and apprenticeships. I would hope that through gaining ‘hands on’ experience and seeing what’s possible, they are inspired to pursue a career in the industry, whether that be as an entrepreneur, a designer or a technician. Many of the students enjoyed their placement so much, they have continued to work for me long after their initial placement has ended.
What advice would you give to aspiring female entrepreneurs looking to start a business?
Believe in yourself and don’t ever think being a female will hold you back. Don’t be afraid to go against the grain and stay true to what you believe in and your own creative vision.
How do you see the role of female business owners evolving in Brompton Cross, London, and what changes would you like to see in the future to further support women in business?
Regarding the growth of female business owners in Brompton Cross, I think the supportive community in the area is what sets it apart. In my own case, I have been warmly welcomed and I am delighted to be amongst many other female leaders and entrepreneurs who inspire me. I have been pleasantly surprised by how supportive it is as an area for newcomers.
In terms of the wider picture, I would like to see changes in government policy towards maternity leave to support female entrepreneurs. It can be hard enough as it is as a woman to take a career break, but even more so as a female founder. I think these fundamental changes to support women are long overdue.
