My Brompton Cross by Gallerist Acoris Andipa

We caught up with Gallerist and Banksy expert Acoris Andipa who has been a resident on Walton Street ever since he can remember. We asked him all about his Brompton Cross.

What is your history with Brompton Cross?
Brompton Cross is a home to me in the literal sense and I have had the pleasure of being based in the area for both my career and personal life. Andipa was founded by my mother Maria Andipa 55 years ago and was my home until my 20s. The Andipa family and gallery have been part of this important, thriving community that brings together such creative talents within art, design and fashion.

Why do you think Brompton Cross is special?
Brompton Cross is a special place that is both a commercial and residential area which gives it such a unique blend of people and businesses. In terms of design, we are blessed to have such classic and cutting edge spaces that craft beautiful pieces. Moving further afield to the King’s Road and its cultural hub of the 60s we can see this bohemian and creative energy that flows around Brompton Cross. Art and design go hand in hand and often interact and communicate. Being around such inspiring designers serves to inspire both myself and the collection we offer to our collectors across the globe.

Where do you hangout or refuel at Brompton Cross?
There really is a plethora of food and drink options across the area. Recently, and with Summer holidays in mind, I have been enjoying (come rain or shine) Aubaine and their slant on a classicTuna Nicoise. For juices and great deli food, I recommend our friend Jak’s. For coffee? I have to say that we make the best!

Where do you like to shop?
What I like about shopping in Brompton Cross is that there seems to be a place for everything and anything. From home accessories to fashion, lounge and swimwear to stationary – the options are really great. One of my favourite places to shop at is Santa Maria Novella which can trace its roots back to Florence and was founded in 1221. Not only are their fragrances magical but the boutique has a timeless, otherworldly feel that is simply captivating. Blue Almonds always have the most wonderful things for our kids and gifts for our clients’ little ones – if all else fails we can always go to our local corner shop – Harrods.

Any special tips for a newcomer?
Out of all of the places to either work or live, Brompton Cross is really special. There is a real community spirit – both in terms of businesses and residence – that makes it an exciting place to live and work. My biggest advice would be to simply say hello to your neighbours as the people of Brompton Cross are at the heart of this inviting district.

Have you a fond memory of the area you can share with us?
When I was a little boy, the Conran shop was actually completely derelict and my local friends and I were just about able to squeeze through the chained doors where we played football inside! We had this huge space all to ourselves with the extra thrill of being somewhere we weren’t supposed to be. How times have changed – from an abandoned building to one of London’s most iconic!
