My Brompton Cross by Interior Designer Katharine Pooley

Katharine Pooley opened her Boutique on Walton Street over 18 years ago with her interior design business operating above the shop floor. It has grown to be an international award winning company with over 40 members of staff based in a design studio in Chelsea. Since she opened she has been a major driving force in the community and heads up the Walton Street Association. We asked her about her Brompton Cross.

What is your history with Brompton Cross?
I have a real affinity with the area, I have shopped on Walton Street since I can remember and have always dreamt of owning my own space here which came true when I set up the Katharine Pooley Ltd boutique! This part of town is a stones throw from many brilliant interiors and design shops so it was important to be in the midst of it all.

Why do you think Brompton Cross is special?
Brompton Cross has always been a wonderful destination, it feels like a secret part of London! It’s leafy streets have a real sense of community and contain the perfect go-between spots for lunch, culture and retail therapy. Some of the shop owners have been on Walton Street for years – over 20 – I have been here 18 already.  I love the diversity of small boutiques – very British.

Where do you hangout or refuel at Brompton Cross?
Daphnes or Scalini’s are my regular client go to’s – for me and my staff we love Jaks

Where do you like to shop?
I am always in Andrew Martin, Frame, Bamford and Nursery Windows.  Channel of course and Salt on special days!!

Any special tips for a newcomer?
Make the most of the area, it’s full of unique independent boutiques, flagships and famous restaurants. Peruse the shops, have lunch with friends and most importantly, enjoy!

Have you a fond memory of the area you can share with us?
Before Covid we created a Christmas market – my favourite time of year. Wandering reindeer and camels, ice sculptures and an oyster bar, the camaraderie on the street was the most special I have ever felt.
